[REC] – Review

July 2, 2009 · 2 comments

We have to tape everything…   As I’m scouring the ‘nets looking for awards that REC has received (should have just saved time by checking imdb first), planning my review out, I stumbled across the review by Fatally-Yours.com which is pretty much exactly what I was going to write. If any of that is any indication of how great REC is, please allow me to rave about it further…   In 2007 a little known film, by the name of [•REC],... [Keep Reading]

Vinyan – Quick Review

April 2, 2009 · 4 comments

It started out so nicely… I was looking forward to checking this out after watching the trailer. The quote from Variety comparing this to Apocolypse Now also gave me a little push. When I got the DVD and read the excerpt on the back that sounds straight out Ju-on, I was like ‘Ju-on set in the Jungle? Heck yes.’ After having watched it, I can safely say that this is nothing close to Apocolypse or Ju-on. The intro was crazy and I was pretty psyched... [Keep Reading]

Planet Terror: Final Girl Film Club

Welcome to Part 1 of 4, from the Grindhouse series of posts. X – WARNING – MAJOR SPOILERS – X (I review the entire movie scene by scene, w/ accompanying stills) Scene 1 – Go-go, not Cry-cry The double feature opens with grindhouse-like motion graphics and sidescrolling “Grindhouse” title graphic before a smash cut to Cherry Darling dancing on stage at a go-go club. During the mesmerizing sequence, Rodriguez uses a special... [Keep Reading]

Friday the 13th ‘09 – An Exhaustive Review

February 16, 2009 · 17 comments

Forget the introduction, lets just get right to it. I only want to point out that this is all from memory, because I definitely wasn’t writing notes in the dark theater while trying to watch the movie. X – WARNING – MAJOR SPOILERS – X (I damn near transcribe the entire movie) The opening scene recaps the origin with some classy black and white credits and some slick freeze frames, while simultaneously adding yet another plothole involving... [Keep Reading]

Review: Five Across The Eyes (2008)

December 26, 2008 · 1 comment

Introduction to Amateur Film (Wikipedia): There are three types of filmmaking- Studio, Independent, and Amateur. Five Across the Eyes is the greatest amateur film I’ve ever seen, and I say that with the utmost respect and adoration. Amateur film has been the biggest inspiration in my life and is definitely a sub-culture of film that cant be denied. I’m talking about the classics like Two Ways the Same, the Imperial Pictures trilogy, or Sam Hain (not... [Keep Reading]

Review – Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer (2008)

December 21, 2008 · Comments Off

*Warning: Spoiler Filled* Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer, horror-comedy, is a love letter to the hero vs. monster movies of yesteryear, hoping to become a cult classic franchise. With obvious inspirations from the likes of Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson, the film is pretty ambitious in concept. The film also feels like a comic book adaptation even though it isn’t. The first thing about the film that I noticed is how great the picture looks, and that’s... [Keep Reading]

Review: The Gruesome Twosome (1967)

September 25, 2008 · Comments Off

A young female college coed happens upon a charming “wig shop”, which just so happens to have a room for rent sign hanging in the window. After approaching the door she meets the kindly old Mrs. Pringle (Elizabeth Davis) who greets her welcomingly, asking her in and promptly introducing her to her stuffed Lynx Napoleon. After a brief inquiry about the room, Mrs. Pringle quickly ushers the girl towards a closed door. Here she begins calling out... [Keep Reading]
